Lipid Profile TestA lipid profile means a group of tests which consists of TC (total cholesterol), HDL (high density lipoprotein) cholesterol, TG (triglycerides) and LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol. In order to assess a person’s cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, lipid profile test is performed. An extensive panel of lipid profile includes very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), LDL to HDL ratio, and total cholesterol to HDL ratio. This includes a panel of blood tests.

Lipids are fatty acid molecules which are made up of hydrocarbons. They are insoluble in water and have important functions in the body like storing energy, act as messengers, behave as signaling molecules, etc. The major categories of lipids include fatty acids, sphingolipids, sterol lipids, glycerolipids, polyketides, etc.  Cholesterol is both absorbed from the foods we intake and produced by the body. TG should be <150 mg/dl. The value of TC should range from 75 to 169 mg/dL for those aged 20 and above, while for those aged 21 and above it should range from 100 to 199 mg/dL. HDL is known as good cholesterol because it helps in getting rid of excess cholesterol as it transports it from the blood vessels to the liver for excretion. It should be greater than 40 mg/dL. LDL cholesterol deposits in blood vessels and clog arteries leading to a disease called atherosclerosis. This could lead to blood clots resulting in heart attacks. Therefore, it is called bad cholesterol. It should be <70 mg/dL for those having some heart disease, <100 mg/dL for high risk patients, and <130 mg/dL for individuals with low risks of coronary heart disease.

According to the ATP III (Adult Treatment Panel III) guidelines, one should get this test done once in five years. This screening helps in evaluation of genetic diseases, which if not detected early can prove lethal. Hyperlipidemia can also be screened with this test which is known to be one of the most important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. This does not mean that cholesterol is bad for health; rather certain amount of it in the body is required. It is a soft and waxy fat which helps in proper functioning of the body. After the age of 35, getting check-up is a must. ADA (The American Diabetes Association) recommends taking this test annually to people who require correction in their lipid profile.

  • Your diet
    • Eat foods with low saturated fat to lower down the LDL cholesterol. Concentrate on foods with high fiber sterols and plant sterols, which is present in margarines. Consume following foods more.

  3. Vegetables: okra and eggplant
  4. Fruits: bananas, apples, oranges and pears

  • Medications: if exercise and medicines fail to help, a variety of medications and combination of treatments can help.

    • If you are obese, lose some weight by cutting down some calories from your daily diet with exercising.
